many things that man still does not know about this vast universe.

By DOUGLAS BIRCH,Associated Press Writer AP - Sunday, June 29 MEYRIN, Switzerland

The most powerful atom-smasher ever built could make some bizarre discoveries, such as invisible matter or extra dimensions in space, after it is switched on in August.

But some critics fear the Large Hadron Collider could exceed physicists' wildest conjectures:
Will it spawn a black hole that could swallow Earth? Or spit out particles that could turn the planet into a hot dead clump?

Ridiculous, say scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known by its French initials CERN _ some of whom have been working for a generation on the $5.8 billion collider, or LHC.

"Obviously, the world will not end when the LHC switches on," said project leader Lyn Evans.

David Francis, a physicist on the collider's huge ATLAS particle detector, smiled when asked whether he worried about black holes and hypothetical killer particles known as strangelets.

"If I thought that this was going to happen, I would be well away from here," he said.

The collider basically consists of a ring of supercooled magnets 17 miles in circumference attached to huge barrel-shaped detectors. The ring, which straddles the French and Swiss border, is buried 330 feet underground.

The machine, which has been called the largest scientific experiment in history, isn't expected to begin test runs until August, and ramping up to full power could take months. But once it is working, it is expected to produce some startling findings.

Scientists plan to hunt for signs of the invisible "dark matter" and "dark energy" that make up more than 96 percent of the universe, and hope to glimpse the elusive Higgs boson, a so-far undiscovered particle thought to give matter its mass.

The collider could find evidence of extra dimensions, a boon for superstring theory, which holds that quarks, the particles that make up atoms, are infinitesimal vibrating strings.

The theory could resolve many of physics' unanswered questions, but requires about 10 dimensions _ far more than the three spatial dimensions our senses experience.

The safety of the collider, which will generate energies seven times higher than its most powerful rival, at Fermilab near Chicago, has been debated for years. The physicist Martin Rees has estimated the chance of an accelerator producing a global catastrophe at one in 50 million _ long odds, to be sure, but about the same as winning some lotteries.

By contrast, a CERN team this month issued a report concluding that there is "no conceivable danger" of a cataclysmic event. The report essentially confirmed the findings of a 2003 CERN safety report, and a panel of five prominent scientists not affiliated with CERN, including one Nobel laureate, endorsed its conclusions.

Critics of the LHC filed a lawsuit in a Hawaiian court in March seeking to block its startup, alleging that there was "a significant risk that ... operation of the Collider may have unintended consequences which could ultimately result in the destruction of our planet."

One of the plaintiffs, Walter L. Wagner, a physicist and lawyer, said Wednesday CERN's safety report, released June 20, "has several major flaws," and his views on the risks of using the particle accelerator had not changed.

On Tuesday, U.S. Justice Department lawyers representing the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation filed a motion to dismiss the case.

The two agencies have contributed $531 million to building the collider, and the NSF has agreed to pay $87 million of its annual operating costs. Hundreds of American scientists will participate in the research.

The lawyers called the plaintiffs' allegations "extraordinarily speculative," and said "there is no basis for any conceivable threat" from black holes or other objects the LHC might produce. A hearing on the motion is expected in late July or August.

In rebutting doomsday scenarios, CERN scientists point out that cosmic rays have been bombarding the earth, and triggering collisions similar to those planned for the collider, since the solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago.

And so far, Earth has survived.

"The LHC is only going to reproduce what nature does every second, what it has been doing for billions of years," said John Ellis, a British theoretical physicist at CERN.

Critics like Wagner have said the collisions caused by accelerators could be more hazardous than those of cosmic rays.

Both may produce micro black holes, subatomic versions of cosmic black holes _ collapsed stars whose gravity fields are so powerful that they can suck in planets and other stars.

But micro black holes produced by cosmic ray collisions would likely be traveling so fast they would pass harmlessly through the earth.

Micro black holes produced by a collider, the skeptics theorize, would move more slowly and might be trapped inside the earth's gravitational field _ and eventually threaten the planet.

Ellis said doomsayers assume that the collider will create micro black holes in the first place, which he called unlikely. And even if they appeared, he said, they would instantly evaporate, as predicted by the British physicist Stephen Hawking.

As for strangelets, CERN scientists point out that they have never been proven to exist. They said that even if these particles formed inside the Collider they would quickly break down.

When the LHC is finally at full power, two beams of protons will race around the huge ring 11,000 times a second in opposite directions. They will travel in two tubes about the width of fire hoses, speeding through a vacuum that is colder and emptier than outer space.

Their trajectory will be curved by supercooled magnets _ to guide the beams around the rings and prevent the packets of protons from cutting through the surrounding magnets like a blowtorch.

The paths of these beams will cross, and a few of the protons in them will collide, at a series of cylindrical detectors along the ring. The two largest detectors are essentially huge digital cameras, each weighing thousands of tons, capable of taking millions of snapshots a second.

Each year the detectors will generate 15 petabytes of data, the equivalent of a stack of CDs 12 miles tall. The data will require a high speed global network of computers for analysis.

Wagner and others filed a lawsuit to halt operation of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, or RHIC, at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York state in 1999. The courts dismissed the suit.

The leafy campus of CERN, a short drive from the shores of Lake Geneva, hardly seems like ground zero for doomsday. And locals don't seem overly concerned. Thousands attended an open house here this spring.

"There is a huge army of scientists who know what they are talking about and are sleeping quite soundly as far as concerns the LHC," said project leader Evans.

news : japan makes robot girlfriend for lonely men

i feel very, very sad when I read such news.. The keyword is "lonely". People are lonely yet not looking in the right places for fulfilment.. Such fantasies remain what they are - mere fantasies & a chasing after the wind... - freshdew

JAPAN MAKES ROBOT GIRLFRIEND FOR LONELY MEN

Yahoo / Reuters - Wednesday, June 18TOKYO -

She is big-busted, petite, very friendly, and she runs on batteries.

A Japanese firm has produced a 38 cm tall robotic girlfriend that kisses on command, to go on sale in September for around $175, with a target market of lonely adult men.

Using her infrared sensors and battery power, the diminutive damsel named "EMA" puckers up for nearby human heads, entering what designers call its "love mode."

"Strong, tough and battle-ready are some of the words often associated with robots, but we wanted to break that stereotype and provide a robot that's sweet and interactive," said Minako Sakanoue, a spokeswoman for the maker, Sega Toys.

"She's very lovable and though she's not a human, she can act like a real girlfriend."

EMA, which stands for Eternal Maiden Actualization, can also hand out business cards, sing and dance, with Sega hoping to sell 10,000 in the first year.

Japan, home to almost half the world's 800,000 industrial robots, envisions a $10-billion market for artificial intelligence in a decade.

The Box with a Small Hole at the bottom

I was washing a plastic box in the kitchen this morning. It was a big box. To save time, after applying detergent on it , I thought I would let the water from the tap flow into it while I dashed to the bathroom.

When I returned, expecting to see the container filled with water, I was surprised to see that there was only a bit of water in it! Then, I remembered that there were two small holes at the bottom of the container. That was why, no matter how long I waited, the container was never going to be filled.

I was reminded that the container was like our spiritual lives. We want our spiritual life to be FILLED (with God's presence, goodness, the power of the Holy Spirit , you name it...) but if we neglect the small hole at the bottom (the small hole may be some persistent sin , mindset, habit, selfishness or unbelief , whatever it is that causes our spiritual life to "leak" away on a constant basis, or even a relationship that we are called to give up because it violates God's principles), we are never going to be filled.

God WANTS to bless, and God DESIRES to bless. He is always pouring his fullness into our lives, guaranteeing us a full LIFE ! But no matter how much He keeps pouring and pouring , if we ignore the small leak in our lives, justifying to ourselves that it is only an "insignificant" habit or a matter of perspective , or telling ourselves that God will forgive anyway (which is true), our spiritual lives will feel empty and we will be frustrated, wondering why and blaming God...

It is time to have a NEW LIFE. I need a new life. By God's grace, He has overcome. It is not going to be easy but the past is wiped away and the new has come. My future will be like the new pages of a new book. The only thing is to believe in the Victory that GOD has already given me!

Receiving the Desire of Our Heart
READ
Psalm 37:4-6

The Lord is to be the greatest passion of a believer’s life. A person who claims to love God should give a relationship with Him priority over possessions, vocation, and even other relationships. Yet some people miss the true message of Psalm 37:4 because they focus only on the part that says they can get what they want. The qualifying statement attached to that promise is a call for devotion to God: “Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart” (emphasis added).

Believers can and should savor pleasures. The heavenly Father wants His children to use the resources He gives as a way to enjoy life (1 Timothy 6:17). For instance, God has made it possible for me to travel and photograph some beautiful places. But the key to enjoying life is to delight in Him above all else. God’s rightful place is as Lord of our life; to give anything else that position puts us at risk.

The human heart is naturally selfish and often destructive. Without God as top priority, we will likely be governed by the pursuit of earthly goods. But when He is our first love, those warped cravings are replaced by desires that fit His will and purpose for us.

King David, a man who faced great tragedy and heartache, understood from experience that a heart devoted to the Lord also knows delight and blessing. Psalm 37 was his encouragement for us to seek God as diligently as he had done. Take David’s words to heart, and let the Lord be your obsession. You will be amazed at how He will bless you.

2 Samuel 7:22 Wherefore thou art great, O Jehovah God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

2 Samuel 7:22 (NIV) How great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.

why are some Christians not physically healed despite praying for healing ?

PART I

Some believers mistakenly believe that if a sick Christian is not healed, it is due to lack of faith.

This is, of course, not true.

There will always be sickness and infirmity on this earth.

For ever since the Fall from Eden, mankind had imperfect bodies and all kinds of sicknesses and afflictions will fall on any man sooner or later.

Nobody ever had perfect health on this earth.

Out of 6 billion people, 6 billion will definitely be sick at some point

and 6 billion will eventually die
(at least on this earth).

Sickness and old age are part and parcel of this mortal body.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44 compares the natural physical body that we have now with the kind of "body" that we will have when we are finally raised in heaven.
'So will it be with the resurrection of the dead.
The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;
it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory;
it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;
it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.'

So what do we do? Should we give up praying? No - indeed, we must continue in fervent prayers, for God is good and He will honour our prayers.

We should have faith in praying for healing.. knowing that God is love (1 John 4:16). ... But at the same time, we leave the results to God, trusting that He loves us, even if we are not healed .

PART II

But, there is a greater glory awaiting us , if we choose to believe in God - and take Him at His word.

1 Corinthians 15:50-53
'.. flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
...Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye... For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable , and we will be changed.'

Jesus is coming again!

Revelation 21:1-5 "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, ... ...They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.' He who was seated on the throne said, 'I am making everything new!' Then he said, 'Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.' "

Jesus is coming again. Do we dare to believe it and receive the free gift of eternal life?

Romans 10
' ... Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. ... ...
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." '

Facing the Winter ( Growing Old )

This article by Dr James Dobson appears in 'Today' (Oct 3):

My mother and father were married for 43 years in one of the most beautiful, loving relationships the world has ever seen.

When my mum turned 50, my father was beginning to think about the passage of time.

And he wrote a poem on that day that he called 'Your Birthday'. This is what it said:

"The whole world singing, now that Spring has come.
I saw a robin in the morning sun. Among the pale green leaves and bursting buds, I heard His talk. But it is Autumn, where we walk."

"'Tis true for us, the Summer too is gone.
Now, whiplash winds arise, and further on the ice and sleet and cold and grim assault to pierce us through. Does Fall in Spring time frighten you?"

"Impotent shines the April sun so fair, to melt the wisps of frost within your lair. My dear I know you feel the threatening gloom, but I'm with you and hand in hand we'll face the winter too."

The Winter did come for my mother and father, and now both of them have passed away. But my dad kept his promise and they faced those difficult years together. Even the ageing process is easier, when it is experienced in the context of love.

a poem

But God was gracious,
loving,
merciful to me,
despite my sin.

God's grace is sufficient for me.

For His grace is made perfect in my weakness.

"Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely .. think upon such things. . Put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." (Philippians 4:8)

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;"
(Proverbs 3:5)

Change our mindset ..

... Our view of God is influenced by our past experiences. And if our experiences are with sinful , imperfect men, these will affect what we think God is like. Especially if our experiences were with authority figures, e.g. our parents . In particular, fathers .

For instance, one who had an abusive father is more likely to scorn the idea of God the Abba Father as being loving. He will think , God! What is this nonsense. You are loving?

Because in his mind, the idea of a Father is not . The very word itself conjures horrible feelings and bad memories for him.

He has never known a human father who is like that, so why should a heavenly Father be like that?

Or, someone who had a distant father who was not fully involved in his life. It is natural that he will struggle with the idea of a God who is actually interested in his life, who is tender and cares for him. A loving Maker who sheds tears for him, who had nail-pierced hands. An authority figure who is not distant at all, but is near & loves him. He may even get very angry reading this.

I know, because I was once like that. It took a journey to change this mindset. And , I forgave my father. Because he is only human.

God REALLY loves you!

And He loves your imperfect father too (whatever things he has or has not done) ...

The Bible tells us that the "height and depth and breadth of God's love" is above our contemplations and beyond what we can comprehend with our finite minds. The bible tells us that "now we know in part" but only later can we know fully.

If you had a good father, praise God, your father is a fraction of what God is really like.

If you didn't have a "good" father, please, understand that God is not like your father. Our human fathers are only human -- like you -- very imperfect, and very fallible. How do we expect a fellow human being to be like God?

Receive God's love. Man may lie but God is not man.
"Is God a man , that he should lie?" "God is not a man, that he should lie in His promises." (Numbers 23:19)

How can God allow anyone to go to hell?

A friend asked me this question the other day: "How can a Loving God and a Horrible Hell both exist?" This problem is not new. It implies that if God really exists and God is so loving, how can he allow anyone to go to hell.

How can a loving God send anybody to hell?
http://www.christiananswers.net/q-grace/hell-and-god.html
Does God really send you to hell? or is it the man in the mirror? God does not desire anyone to go to Hell. He weeps when it happens.

Is the "burning fire" in Hell literal or figurative?
http://www.christiananswers.net/q-grace/hell-fire.html
Ans: Does it matter?

Does God feel our pain?
http://www.christiananswers.net/q-aiia/god-pain.html

What will we be doing in heaven??

In Luke 23:43, Jesus declared, "Truly I say to you, Today you shall be with Me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43). The Greek word Jesus used for paradise is paradeisos which means "a park, that is, (specifically) an Eden (place of future happiness, paradise)".

Not just any park but "the paradise of God" or park of God (Revelations 2:7) . Does this sound like a boring place?

Jesus said, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve only Him" (Matthew 4:10).

Worship is from the heart.

Serving God is worship and Scripture is clear we will serve God in Heaven. We are unable to fully serve God in this life due to sin but in Heaven "every curse will no longer be" (Revelation 22:3).

We will not be under the curse of sin any longer so everything we do will be worship in Heaven. We will never be motivated by anything other than our love for God. Everything we do will be out of our love for God, untainted by our sin nature.

So what will we do? Learn. "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor?" (Romans 11:34) "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).

God is bigger than forever and it will take eternity "to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height, and to know the love of Christ" (Ephesians 3:18-19).

"I shall fully know even as I also am fully known" (1 Corinthians 13:12). In other words, there is no need to hide anything in heaven. There is nothing to be ashamed of. There is nothing to hide.

We will interact with "a great multitude, which no man could number, out of all nations and kindreds and people and tongues" (Revelation 7:9).

Beginning the New Year

It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing
praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim
Your unfailing love in the morning, Your
faithfulness in the evening. PSALM 92:1, 2 NLT

It is good to begin a new year with Jesus!
It is good to sail into the uncharted waters of '07 because He
is your Captain and the Anchor of your soul;
It is good to walk upon unexplored trails because He is your
Guide and the Guardian of your way,
the One who knows the beginning from the end.

It is good to have your hands empty, for He will fill them;
It is good to have your heart open, for He will cause it to overflow.
It is good to have your ears listening, for His voice will
be the sweetest sound you hear;
It is good to have your feet grounded, for He is your Rock
and the Foundation upon which you stand.

It is good to trust Him because He makes no mistakes;
It is good to obey Him for His plans include what is best;
It is good to rest in Him for He is the Lord of the easy yoke;
It is good to depend on Him for He takes care of you daily.

It is good to delight in Him.

May the Lord fill your year with good things.
